The soft hissing of the idli cooker signaled breakfast time at the VS household. We would run to the kitchen to see Rajam Paati deftly scooping idlis from their plates. Soon the steaming idlis would occupy their place next to a dabba of molaga podi - Paatiâs delicious blend of sesame seeds daal and other spices from our kitchen. We would make a mound of the podi clear out the centre for gingelly oil and mix the two carefully. Once this ritual was complete we would proceed to dig in! The fluffy idlis and crunchy podi made for a heavenly combination. And if it was our lucky day Paati would surprise us with crisp dosas to polish off the podi.
