The hue of Sabai grass is naturally greenish. It is harvested twice a year once during the winter and once during the spring. It was formerly a wild grass found only in non-timber forest. To make items artisans had to travel to the forest to cut Sabai grass. However since its significance has grown through time farmers have begun to cultivate it. SIKKI CRAFT has clusters in Mayur Vihar and other villages in West Bengal and Odisha. Because Sabai Grass is high in silica it takes less water when framing making it more environmentally friendly. Another intriguing fact is that each crop cultivated in a different season has a little different colour than the others. Each crop has its own distinct colour which is enhanced by dying. Each artisan's work is a lovely combination of colours from several crops making each one distinctive in its own way.
